Reflections on Bernadette

We’re now almost a month past Bernadette and Other Teenage Folk Tales opening for 5 wonderfully sold-out performances.

This show landed at a crucial moment for teenagers and us grown ups who work and live with them. With rising extremism and growing fears about online spaces, we know that social media can offer both an escape and a sense of belonging in an overwhelming world. But through The Power Project and the creation of this show we have witnessed firsthand the joy of teenagers immersing themselves in their imaginations—both independently and collectively.

At a time when creative opportunities are being stripped from schools and the pressures and polarisation for young people are mounting, the arts remain a vital outlet. They provide not just escapism, but also new perspectives, a release valve, and—most importantly—real-life spaces where expression and difference can exist. Spaces where supportive adults are committed to inclusion and accountability.

Bernadette and Other Teenage Folk Tales reflected the pressures young people face, but more than that, it explored how we can escape reality in ways that uplift rather than isolate.

As always with our shows this feels like a beginning rather than an ending. We are now working with the Power Project company to design a programme of work with teenagers and we will continue to provide spaces for young people in Stoke-on-Trent to thrive and find their power 🧡

Creative evaluator Nic Winstanley is writing up a report which will capture the whole journey of the Power Project to Bernadette and other Teenage Folk Tales which will be made public as soon as it’s ready. And in the meantime we’re taking the company to Alton Towers this month as a post show celebration!!
